LED Vapor Proof

What are Vapor Proof Lights?

Vapor proof light fixtures use rugged die-cast housings for applications where the lamp socket and wiring are protected from rain, corrosive fumes, non-combustible dusts, moisture, and nonexplosive vapors and gases.

LED Vapor Tight Linear Lighting features a classic design and durability for use in new construction or retrofit applications. An outdoor vapor tight housing protects the light fixture from water and dirt in applications like Canopy Lighting, Covered Walkway Lighting, Parking Garage Lighting, Stairwell Lighting, Security Lighting.

What are the different types of Vapor Proof Lights?

These fixtures can come in 3 forms; high bay, linear and jar. High bay vapor tight fixtures are intended for use in indoor applications where the fixture is mounted to ceilings at least 18 feet high and can provide more illumination over a larger area.

Linear vapor tight fixtures typically come in 2, 4- and 8-foot lengths and can be mounted to ceilings, soffits or walls to provide a wide spread of illumination. Jar vapor tight fixtures are used to illuminate smaller spaces and can be mounted to walls, ceilings or hung as a pendant. These lights can vary further by the type of light source is used such as LED, incandescent or fluorescent.

Difference Between Vapor Proof Lights and Vapor Tight Light

Ready for this? There is no difference between the LED Vapor proof lights and LED Vapor tight lights other than the shapes and location applications. But even names like vapor proof,  vapor lock, water tight lights, or even tri-proof lights (tri for air, gas and water proof). Vapor proof lights are designed to replace lights in any damp or wet environments. Regardless of the name you are most familiar with, they are an ideal solution for wet and sometimes even explosive-prone industrial areas.

Where are Vapor Tight Lights installed?

The LED Vapor Tight Linear Lighting is an energy efficient, Wet Location rated fixture. The IP65-rated fixtures are designed to replace inefficient fluorescent light tubes in car wash operations, airports, tunnels, food processing areas, maintenance areas, parking garages and stairwells and many other commercial and industrial lighting areas. LED Vapor Tight Linear Lighting is versatile and is suitable for indoor and outdoor applications and can be fixed or suspended mounted.

Vapor Tight light fixtures can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications that require durability, long life and water- and/or dust-resistance. They also protect against corrosion which affects the quality of light delivered. Examples are food service areas, car washes, parking garages, shopping centers, airports, stairwells and refrigeration rooms.

Below is additional context as to how each of the aforementioned locations provide specific difficulties which warrant vapor proof fixtures:

  • Car washes require lights that will withstand dirt, water, soap and heat.
  • Refrigeration and food service areas require lights that will withstand the cold and/or moisture. These areas also require that the fixtures can regularly sprayed down for cleaning.
  • Parking garages and stairwells require lights that will withstand moisture and dust.
  • Airports and shopping centers require lights that will withstand the elements such as extreme cold, rain and dust so that they provide reliable and long-lasting illumination with provides safety and reliability for workers and pedestrians using the area.

What Are IP Ratings?

To get an idea of how IP ratings work, take a look at an IP ratings chart. Each IP rating is a two-digit number and each digit of the number has a specific meaning:

  • The first number identifies the level of protection against ingress of solids, including dust, dirt, debris and accidental contact.
  • The second number identifies the level of protection against ingress of liquids, including water, chemicals and any other liquids that may be present in the device’s environment.

Note that there are some factors that IP ratings don’t take into account, such as resistance to heavy impacts and resistance to corrosion. If you need protection against these conditions, look into NEMA ratings (for corrosion) and IK ratings (for impacts).

If you want to light your outdoor area, one solution that may cross your mind is the installation of light emitting diode lamp. However, outdoor environments are prone to conditions such as heavy downpour, dust, among others, which may interfere with or even damage your lighting fixture. Fortunately, LED fixture manufacturers like us experts here at LITELUME are aware of such issues, and for that reason, we make the fixtures with varying waterproof ability. While shopping for such fixtures, you’ll come across different IP Codes, each signifying the degree of protection that an appliance has against harmful elements such as water.

When considering installing a LED lighting device that has a strong waterproof ability, regular flood light is the real deal. Such lights normally have IP65 or IP66 ratings. However, the latter has a more robust waterproof capability, but it is paramount to know what “IP66” means. International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) publishes IP codes, describing the amount of water that a mechanical casing or electrical enclosure can withstand, among other protective capabilities.

What is an IP65 Waterproof Rating?

An IP65 rated enclosure gives protection against low pressure water jets from any direction, as well as condensation and water spray. It’s suitable for most outdoor enclosures that won’t encounter extreme weather such as flooding.

What is an IP66 Waterproof Rating?

P66 enclosures offer the highest protection against particles, and a high level of protection against water. These enclosures stringently adhere to these standards, and you can expect superior quality and craftsmanship.

Defining IP66 Ratings Characteristics:

  • Complete protection from dust, oil, and other non-corrosive material
  • Complete protection from contact with enclosed equipment
  • Protection from water, even from powerful jets of water
  • Equivalent to NEMA rated 4 and 4X enclosures
  • Engraving, silk-screening, and anodizing services available
  • Custom with cutouts, insulation, hinges, latches or locks

What is an IP67 Waterproof Rating?

A lot of people have read this term but don’t know what it means. We’ll break it down so that it is clear. IP67 is the Ingress Protection. The number 6 refers to dust tight and offers complete protection against it, while the number 7 means protection against the ingress of water between 15 cm and 1 m deep.

What is an IP68 rating?

In the same way, the number 6 in IP68 means protection against dust. On the other hand, the number 8 means protection against long periods of immersion in water. In simpler words, it means that the light is fully sealed, making it perfect to be used underwater.  It is above IP67 because it can be submersed further down, below the one meter level.

IP Ratings Breakdown: Digital Coding

Below is a chart of all the IP ratings and their respective first and second digit definitions:

What are the Benefits of Vapor Proof Lights?

Below is are four of the top advantages of linear LED vapor proof light fixtures:

  1. Environments and settings where there may be more water, heat, humidity, and other debris known to damage lighting fixtures, vapor tight fixtures are an ideal choice for locations where these conditions can be an issue.
  2. Whether an outdoor setting where the elements are a problem or an indoor setting presenting unique obstacles such as a cold storage warehouse, wet location fixtures are made with extra durability and protection built in for a worry-free lighting option.
  3. Aside from protecting the bulb and lens from water damage, these fixtures are also great at protecting against rust and corrosion.
  4. These fixtures are long-lasting and can save money in the long run with minimal replacements needed while requiring little to no maintenance or upkeep over the years.
